As much guidance as William Heikkinen has been given by sports coaches who saw something special in him, by his family, and teachers, he understands the importance of giving back to the community. During his senior year at Andover High School, Will and a group of his peers became involved with tutoring and mentoring children at the Robert L. Frost Elementary School in Lawrence.

While they may not have realized it at the time, Will and his classmates had a huge impact on the younger students with whom they spent time. These high school seniors were fantastic role models and more than prepared for the challenge of helping these young students get motivated to achieve their academic goals. Not only did the teachers see a positive change in the children’s academic successes, but in addition, they saw an increase in the students’ confidence and self-reliance.

William Heikkinen and his classmates’ commitment to these children turned this volunteer venture into a positive experience for everyone involved. The principal of the school wrote a letter of commendation thanking each high school senior for his/her contributions to the students, teachers, and the entire school.

His community involvement helped William understand the need to give back and help others succeed. It’s easier to give money, but when you give of your time and help better the lives of those around you, you are making an even more important contribution.
